Greens Coulee

The Greens Coulee nature preserve includes 82 acres protected by Mississippi Valley Conservancy within the City of Onalaska’s Greens Coulee Park. This protected bluff land above Onalaska occurred in two acquisitions: the  Savanna Oaks Tract in December of 2009 and the Elmwood Partners Tract in December of 2010. The property is located in the City of Onalaska. These two acquisitions were made under a cooperative agreement between the City of Onalaska and the Conservancy. Since their acquisition, ownership of both tracts has been transferred to the City of Onalaska.

The land is managed as natural habitat and is part of the larger city Greenway Project with a connection to the Greens Coulee Park bluff. Hiking and other non-motorized uses such as cross country skiing and bird watching are encouraged.

The bluff property allows visitors a chance to explore a unique landscape that would have been prevalent hundreds of years ago. It features bluff prairie and oak savanna that have become increasingly rare due to development, mining, and agriculture. Visitors will enjoy the sweeping views of the Mississippi River Valley from the bluff tops, the mushroom rock formations, and diverse wildlife habitat.

The property is available for public use. In addition to activities such as snow shoeing, hiking, and bird watching, bow hunting is allowed according to the state and city ordinances.
